Sensory Grounding
Sensory grounding is a way to bring ourselves into our body so that we can begin to relax and become present. When we do sensory grounding, we are focused on noticing what is happening around us through focusing on things we can taste, see, smell, touch, and hear.
Here’s how it works:
- Using Your Senses: We have five possible senses that help us understand the world – sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. Sensory grounding uses theses five senses to make us more aware of what is going on outside of our head and away from gender dysphoria.
- Focus on Right Now: When we use sensory grounding, we are forced to focus on what’s happening right at that moment external to us, and not on the gender dysphoria.
- Calm Your Mind: By paying attention to your senses, we give our mind a momentary break from all that the gender dysphoria is trying to tell us or make us do.
