Finding Your People: Safe and Affirming Connections

Build Community

When we’re around other trans and/or nonbinary people, we often don’t have to explain ourselves or educate others. We can just exist as we are. That alone can bring a huge sense of relief and comfort.

Connection might look like laughing together, talking about things that are hard, sharing memes, or simply being in a space where your gender is understood. These moments remind us that we’re not alone and that there is nothing wrong with how we feel.

At the same time, finding community isn’t always easy.

If you live in a rural area, don’t have supportive adults around, or are just beginning to explore your gender, it might feel difficult to meet other trans and/or nonbinary people. But connection is still possible, and you deserve relationships that feel safe, affirming, and supportive!

Ways to Build Community

Talk with a Trusted Adult

If there is a supportive adult in your life (a parent, school counselor, teacher, coach, or family member), they may be able to help you find LGBTQ+ youth groups or safe spaces in your area.

Look for LGBTQ+ Youth Programs

Many communities have LGBTQ+ centers that offer youth groups, social events, or support meetings. These spaces are often specifically designed to be safe and welcoming for LGBTQ+ youth. You can search for centers near you here: lgbtqcenters.org

Join Online Communities

Online spaces can help you connect with other trans and nonbinary teens even if there are not many resources where you live.

Some teens find community through:

  • Discord servers for LGBTQ+ teens
  • Online support groups
  • Moderated LGBTQ+ teen forums

If you search on sites like Disboard, you can find Discord servers focused on LGBTQ+ youth communities.

Gender & Sexuality Alliances (GSAs)

Many schools have clubs called Gender & Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) where LGBTQ+ students and allies can meet, talk, and support each other.

If your school doesn’t have one, you might even consider starting one with help from a supportive teacher or staff member.

Follow Affirming Creators

Community can also come from seeing people online who share similar experiences.

Following affirming trans and nonbinary creators can help you:

  • learn new coping ideas
  • feel less alone
  • see positive examples of gender diversity

Just remember that social media shows only part of someone’s life, so try not to compare yourself too much.
